Men’s Skincare Tips - Finding Your Skin Type

Men’s opinions about skincare can vary even more than their skin types. Some believe in going to great lengths to preserve their skin while others only wash their face with whatever shampoo falls off their head while in the shower. Whatever group you might fall into, we think we’ve got some valuable tips to share with you to help you take steps toward having great skin that looks and feels better.

Finding Your Skin Type

Taking care of your skin starts with knowing what kind of skin you have! Your skincare routine will change drastically from one skin type to another. So what are the types of skin a man can have?

  • Oily - Is your skin typically shiny?
  • Dry - Does your skin feel tight on your face?
  • Sensitive - Any red bumps or irritation when you shave? Even with a fresh blade and plenty of shaving cream?

These questions can help you identify which skin type you are. Once you’ve determined which skin type you have, it’s time to learn how to care for said skin type. Below, we’ve outlined steps to take for your specific skin type.

How to Take Care of Oily Skin

Oily skin can be deceiving. You might think because of the oils on your face that you don’t need to moisturize, but that could not be further from the truth! You just need to choose the right moisturizer and use other products and techniques alongside your facial moisturizer. Make sure to exfoliate if you have oily skin. Because your face is producing more oil it can become easier for those oils to become trapped under dirt and clog your pores.

This will cause you to break out. Exfoliation can help alleviate these effects and clear up your skin. Remember to follow that up with a quality face wash, and end with some good moisturizer to replace the oils that were there. It may seem counter-intuitive, but adding moisture to your face replaces the need for your skin to overproduce its own oil.

Taking Care of Dry Skin

Dry skin can be tricky! First, you need to figure out why your skin is dry before trying recommendations. If you have eczema or another skin condition, you’ll want to get expert advice. If you just tend to have slightly drier than normal skin or if you happen to live in a dry climate, we’ve got some advice and great product for you to use!

Exfoliation is not recommended for those with dry, irritated skin. It may cause further problems for you and make your skin red. It goes without saying that you’ll want some sort of moisturizer, but you need to be careful with them! Moisturizers with harsh chemicals can be especially harmful to your skin type. Choose something more natural like our Beach Care - Skin moisturizer!

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can mean a lot of things. It might mean that you have a tendency to break out when using colognes or poorly made skincare products. It might also be that you break out with bad razor burn after you shave. Whatever the case may be, it’s important to try to figure out what your skin sensitivities are to better avoid things that make you hurt! If you are using a new product or aftershave cream, try applying it to a small part of your skin rather than your entire face. If the test goes okay, feel free to use it more!
